I. Age of Ancient Powers
Long ago, in a different age when the universe was a different place, the powers that now dominate the Worlds did not exist, and the Ancient Powers ruled the universe. For a time, there was peace, and the Ancient Powers managed to co-exist with one another. And, for a time, all were happy.
A. Great War
But the peaceful happiness lasted only for a short time. Eventually, the balance of power shifted, and jealously ripped through the Ancient Powers. It was so long ago, no official record of who struck first exists, but it is widely believed that the Old Republic, the ancestor of the Empire , was the cause. War rose on an unimaginable scale. Whole planets were razed and all life was incinerated on their surfaces. The death toll climbed astronomically as the Ancient Powers forced their populations into battle. Records of the War’s actual devastation have long since been lost. Thousands of years later, however, the charred surfaces of the planets still remain. The aches still throb in the hearts of Fringe Worlders, whose legends tell the horror of the war among the Ancient Powers. The war raged on and the Ancient Powers fell one by one. And as they fell the Old Republic consumed their powers and used them to fight on, until nothing was left. The Old Republic, shaken by the epic war, was the only survivor. Its people, demoralized and fearful the likelihood of death and destruction to come, looked for a leader. Out of the ashes of despair rose Herricus, a celebrated hero of the Great War.
B. Herrican Reform
When the dust and flames from the Great War had settled, the status of one man soared above it all. Herricus, Champion of the Republic, led his people into a new age.
Herricus viewed the individuality and democracy of the Republic as a weakness that had led to their near collapse during the Great War. A passionate leader, Herricus convinced his people that he cared for them and for their futures. Countless men, women and children pledged their lives to Herricus, swearing to follow him and his new Empire. The Herrican Reform, as it is now called, abolished individualism and democracy, and the seeds of the Empire were sewn. Now Herrican Reforms mark the beginning of a new Imperial Age.
II. Imperial Age
As if with the lifting of some great curtain, The Empire ascended to power and marked the beginning of a new age. The Age of Ancient Powers, as it is now called, was over and a new era, the Imperial Age, began.
The Imperial Age, or the IA as it came to be commonly called, became standard terminology in almost all corners of civilization, its use only rejected by pockets of Fringe Worlders who desperately clung to old tribal customs. However, all know of the dating system’s existence and function.
A. First War of Domination.
The Empire began to grow slowly and stretched its arms across neighboring nations and planets, grabbing at anything not tied down. In small skirmishes, The Empire first tasted conquest and thus began its lust for ever greater power and domination. Herricus, now the Emperor, made a decision; he believed that the Empire had enough power to absorb all threats in one great surge and so looked to the larger families for aid in structuring this campaign. This conflict was to become known as the First War of Domination.
Although allegiance was sworn only to the Emperor, on the battlefield the troops were faithful to General Saniei, a great and wealthy man from the Saniei family, one of the largest and most influential in the Empire. Under General Saniei, the Imperial forces experienced many great victories, and the Empire grew vastly and quickly. However, the Empire overestimated its own power, and before long the troops were no longer able to hold their offensive front lines. Allegiances sprung up between smaller nations, their soldiers fighting passionately, not only for their own lives, but for their familys’ ways of life that the Empire threatened to destroy. The Empire was forced to abandon the campaign; nevertheless General Saniei returned home an intrepid hero, loved by the people and, most importantly, trusted by the Emperor himself.
